CHESHIRE -- Quinn's Legacy Foundation has received its largest private contribution to date -- $20,000 -- from Sheriff Carmen C. Massimiano Jr. and the sheriff's deputies of Berkshire County. The foundation is seeking to build an ice arena in Pittsfield. The largest corporate contribution received so far has been $75,000 from Berkshire Life Insurance Co.

"I was floored when I got the call from Sheriff Massimiano saying he and his deputies wanted to donate $20,000 to our project," said Stephen Connally, the foundation's president. "The amount of the donation points to several things, including the generosity of the sheriff's office, the legitimacy of this project and the need for team work in getting this project completed."

The donation stems from the annual Deputy David L. Sheran Memorial Golf Tournament. It follows the completion last year of a five-year, $100,000 commitment to fund scholarships to St. Joseph's Central High School.

"Through the hard work by sheriff's deputies, and thanks to the generosity of individuals and businesses throughout Berkshire County, we have been fortunate enough to be able to contribute to our neighbors in the community," Massimiano said. "I am extremely proud of the good work that we do at the sheriff's office. I believe it is important to show our support for the community, and Quinn's Legacy Foundation is certainly a worthy beneficiary of our support."

The foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art athletic and educational support, and to promoting self-esteem and sportsmanship for individuals and families of Berkshire County and the surrounding tri-state area. It was founded in memory of Quinn Connally, who died as a result of a fatal hockey accident on Dec. 4, 2000.

"Each contribution brings another member to the team," said foundation Vice President Ann Connally. "Together, we are going to build this facility for the youth of our community. We are going to make it happen for them and for their children and their children. When we help to build a better future for them, we help ourselves too."
